A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for his part in a car chase in which a police officer was 'driven at' narrowly avoiding serious injury.

Matthew Anderson (23) of Ballymagowan Avenue in Derry admitted four charges that occurred on February 2 this year.

He admitted assaulting a police officer, obstructing police, resisting police and failing to give a specimen.

The court heard that the charges arise out of an incident in which Anderson was a passenger in a car that was involved in a police chase from Strabane to Derry.

It was said that during the chase the car Anderson was in was driven dangerously and a stinger had to be used.

The court heard that a female officer was driven at and only narrowly avoided injury.

The assault charge related to an incident while in custody Anderson spat at an officer.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that his client had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

Anderson was jailed for three months and disqualified from driving for three years.
