Derry man refused bail over non-fatal strangulation of his partner

Defendant faces court again on July 23 following alleged domestic incidents in June
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with two counts of assault and one non-fatal strangulation of his partner.
Darren O'Neill (30) of Rockmills in Derry was charged with the assaults that were said to have occurred on June 16 and 24 and the non-fatal strangulation that was said to have occurred on June 24.
Police arrived at O'Neill's flat, where he directed them to the location of the alleged injured party.
Police went to this address and returned to O'Neill's flat where he surrendered himself.
Police were opposed to bail as O'Neill has an identical charge and suspended sentence from January last year against a different injured party, as well as eighteen previous assault convictions.
Defence solicitor Jack Quigley said that O'Neill had co-operated fully with police but noted his relevant history of similar offences.
Bail was refused and he will appear again on July 23.
