27-year-old man was caught by police after attempting to flee from a court-mandated city centre exclusion zone

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court following his sixth breach of bail conditions.

Kieran Kelly (27) of Beraghvale in Derry was on bail for an assault that was said to have occurred in April this year. His conditions included that he not enter the city centre and he not consume alcohol in public.

Police spotted him in the exclusion zone on June 23 and he attempted to flee.

Police caught him easily as he was intoxicated at the time but could only charge him for a single breach as they had not seen him consume any alcohol.

Bail was objected to as it was his sixth breach, one in April, three in May and two in June.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that Kelly had previously pleaded guilty to the assault charges, adding that he suffers from an alcohol addiction.

He also said that all the breaches were all of a similar nature, relating to alcohol and the exclusion zone, and that there was no new offending.

He added that Kelly has never been given a map of the exclusion zone.

Bail was denied and he will appear again on July 10.
