Derry man with 128 previous convictions charged with series of public order offences

Che O'Connor (24) of The Old Fort in Derry appeared charged with two counts of resisting police and four assaults on police that were said to have occurred on November 23
A man who has 128 previous convictions has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with a series of public order offences.
Che O'Connor (24) of The Old Fort in Derry appeared charged with two counts of resisting police and four assaults on police that were said to have occurred on November 23.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
He told the court that police were called by a woman who said her former partner, the defendant, had turned up at her address drinking and was refusing to leave.
Police attended and saw the premises in 'disarray' with various items including a television smashed and the woman said O'Connor was responsible after she asked him to leave.
The defendant was found intoxicated in the bedroom and struggled with officers and had to be carried down the stairs.
He was said to have spat at officers and tried to headbutt others.
While in custody he was said to have tried to spit at a detention officer.
Eventually limb restraints had to be used as the defendant continued to struggle.
Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending and the officer told the court that O'Connor had breached bail on 23 occasions.
Defence solicitor Jack Quigley said that the defendant was 'no stranger to the court'.
He said that his client had been released in June and had not been in court since then which he said was 'an achievement'.
The solicitor said that 'sadly' there had been too much drink taken and when his client sobered up he was 'co-operative and apologetic '.
He asked the court to give O'Connor a final chance.
District Judge Barney McElholm said he would give the defendant one chance but that this was his final warning.
O'Connor was released on bail with a curfew and tag and will appear again on December 12.
