Derry MLA calls for "common-sense" road planning ahead of Foyle Cup

Mark H Durkan warns against a repeat of last year’s North West gridlock
Derry MLA Mark H Durkan has submitted a priority Assembly Question calling on the Infrastructure Minister to suspend all non-essential roadworks across the North West during the upcoming 2026 Foyle Cup Tournament.
Mr Durkan previously criticised the lack of planning around this key event, following significant traffic disruption caused by a series of roadworks during last year’s event.
The MLA for Foyle said: “The Foyle Cup is a flagship event for the North West, attracting thousands of visitors each year. We need proper coordination across agencies in terms of roadworks, to ensure it can run as smoothly as possible.
“Last July, enjoyment of the event was dampened by roadworks and widespread disruption. The gridlock didn’t just impact players and families trying to make matches on time, but all road users.
“Lessons must be learned from last year and implementing common-sense measures like pausing non-essential works could make a significant difference.
"I’ve written to the Minister for Infrastructure ahead of the 2026 tournament, urging forward planning and decisive action now to ensure the road network supports, rather than disrupts, one of the North West’s most important events.”
