Derry Palestine activists receive PSNI letters over 'Defend the Right to Protest rallies

‘I would be committing a crime if I stayed quiet’ - Kate Nash

A number of people in Derry, including members of Derry IPSC, have received letters from the PSNI’s Public Order Enquiry Team regarding ‘Defend the Right to Protest’ rallies in the city.

The letters, hand-delivered on Friday night, concerned the July 19 and July 26, ‘Defend the Right to Protest’ rallies in Waterloo Place.

They said: “You have been identified by Police as having taken part in these protests. Police therefore have grounds to suspect that you may have committed offences contrary to Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000.” Recipients have been requested to “arrange an interview” with the PSNI “as a voluntary attendee”. They have also been warned failure to do so “may result in you being reported to the Public Prosecution Service without the opportunity to provide your account”.placeholder image

Kate Nash, former chairperson of the Derry Bloody Sunday March Committee, is one of those who received the letter.

Speaking to The Derry News, Ms Nash said the letter was in connection with the protests she was taking part in for Palestine Action.

“I totally agree with it and my conscience would not let me say anything else because I know that is so wrong,” she added.

“There are people suffering a genocide, thousands of them, little children in prison - 300 in prison. There are more than 10,000 prisoners in Israeli jails and we know the kind of stuff that is happening to them and some have died, obviously tortured very, very badly.

“My conscience couldn’t let that go on and me not say anything. I would be committing a crime if I stayed quiet about all of that. “And I know the British Government is responsible in part for that and it is time they stopped that - stop sending money and stop sending arms to Israel to kill innocent people.

“It is all too much. We want it stopped and we want it stopped now. I would like the EU and the UN to make up an army and send it in to protect those people and to distribute the aid. "They should have done that more than a year ago. That should never have been allowed to happen.”
