People have been urged to climb up a mountain on the Derry/Donegal border this weekend – and help raise money for a lifesaving project.

The walk up Scalp Mountain on Sunday, June 4, is in aid of Concern Worldwide.

Money raised will be used to help the charity tackle the devastating famine in East Africa.

The starting point for Sunday’s walk will be clearly signposted from Burnfoot village.

The walk is over a 2.5 mile course which has been concreted enabling all walkers to use trainers or comfortable shoes.

At the top of the mountain, participants will enjoy a stunning view across Derry and Donegal.

Charlie Glenn, a member of the Derry branch of Concern Worldwide, appealed to people to take part in the walk.

“Once again the spectre of famine is haunting the peoples of East Africa,” he said.

“Drought and its companion famine are affecting an estimated 16 million people across the region.

“Even in countries with functioning governments such as Kenya and Ethiopia the situation is extremely grave but for those in a state of civil war such as Somalia and South Sudan much of the population is helpless in the face of utter disaster.

“CONCERN Worldwide has launched an Emergency Appeal in response to this situation and has arranged for donations to be made at the CONCERN Bookshop in Derry’s Ferryquay Street during normal opening hours.

“Without the assistance provided by CONCERN and sister organisations, not only will many people die of want, but any progress made will be lost with grave implications for the future development of the region and for the long term health and opportunities for children in particular.

“We can only hope that our many donors in this area will answer the call once again for which we thank you.”
