The Irish Government has pledged £75 million for the A5 upgrade between Aughnacloy and Derry.

The commitment was given by Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan this morning..

The first phase, which is expected to begin in 2017 depending on planning permission, will see a dual carriageway constructed on the A5 between Derry and Strabane, from Newbuildings to the “north of Strabane.”

The news has been welcomed by Foyle Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney who said the A5 upgraded was one of the most major infrastructural projects planned in recent years.

He said: “It has the potential to transform the economy of the north west of Ireland.”

He added: "Sinn Féin has committed that work will start as soon as possible and we are determined to see the second phase of the A5 upgrade from Omagh to Aughnacloy start at the same time in 2017.”

Mr McCartney concluded: "This progress on the road is welcome and I look forward to the full completion of the A5 project as soon as possible."
