A woman has been jailed in Derry Magistrates Court following a number of charges of theft.

Margaret Stokes (30) of Lavery Park in Derry was charged with the offences that occurred in a Spar shop in July this year.

Police were called after the shop reported two females entering the shop, taking a number of items and walking out without paying. The total value of the stolen items was £6.28.

Stokes was identified via CCTV and police objected to bail as they said she has a very relevant record and is at clear risk of reoffending.

Defense solicitor Seamus Quigley said that Stokes made full admissions when interviewed and he called the theft 'about as minor as you can get'.

She also had two suspended sentences for similar charges.

District Judge Barney McElhom said that Stokes had been 'given a very clear warning' in February 2023 that if she were 'to reoffend in this region again' she'd 'go to prison for a lengthy period'.

She was sentenced to ten months in custody.
