Derry’s ‘Peace Flame’ burns brightly again after being targeted by mindless vandals

Derry’s “Peace Flame” has been repaired after it was targeted by mindless vandals.
The flame, which is located in the Peace Garden on Foyle Street, was lit by children from both sides of the community in 2013 as part of the Bright, Brand New Day programme led by local clergyman Reverend David Latimer of First Derry Presbyterian Church.
The symbol (pictured) was lit that day ahead of a keynote speech by Martin Luther King Jnr, the son of the world famous peace activist, attended by thousands in the Guildhall Square.
However, two weeks ago, the glass casing around the flame was damaged by vandals and a protective barrier was placed around the peace monument.
However, the flame will burn in all its glory as Derry City and Strabane District Council have repaired the glass and lit the flame, with which there had also previously been problems.
