Derry's Tyainon and Aurora Cartin compete on world stage

Team Torres coach, Martin McLaughlin, praised their recent successes
At the weekend two members of the Cartin family, Tyainon and Aurora, competed in the biggest competition in the world for kids Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The Pan Kids IBJJF Jiu-jitsu Championships is one of the largest and most prestigious jiu-jitsu tournaments.
Tyainon placed second, while Aurora placed third in their respective categories.
The teenage siblings fight out of Team Torres in Derry.
Speaking on their recent successes, coach Martin McLaughlin, said: “Two of our teenage attendees competed in the Pan Kids IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship event in Florida.
“They both came away with medals in their second attempt at this competition.
“Unfortunately, Aurora was beaten in her first outing but was very close in her second match, and nearly secured a submission finish.
“On the day Tyainon had three fights, and won his first two via submissions from the back and unluckily lost out in the final.
“This was a great display by both kids on the world stage under IBJJF in one of the four major tournaments put on annually by the IBJJF.
“In the last few weeks, these kids have won seven medals between them in two competitions, bringing home four gold, two silver and one bronze in IBJJF Kids Pans and UK Elite Worlds.
“An unbelievable medal haul. As stated many times, our kids and teen programs are geared towards anti bullying, with a priority being on building confident and resilient young adolescents.
“But, if the kids wish and desire to become competitive, we have the coaching infrastructure available to help these kids to be successful at the highest levels in the sport.
“A huge thank you to the coaches involved in this effort.
“Well done again, Tyainon and Aurora. We at Team Torres are proud of the effort you put into preparation for these competitions and your great results on the day.”
