Dobbins expresses concern about pedestrian safety on Culmore Road
Derry SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins has expressed concerns over work being carried out on one of the busiest roads serving the city.
Cllr Dobbins said she had been “inundated” by complaints as a result of pedestrians, especially schoolchildren, being forced to walk onto the Culmore Road as the footpaths have been closed due to work being carried out by both by both Transport NI and NI Water on the busy Culmore Road
She said: “I have been inundated with calls from parents voicing grave concern about the inability to walk past these works due to barriers being placed on footpaths.
“These barriers have completely blocked the pedestrian thoroughfare and the only option is to cross the busy Culmore Road to the other side.
“The nearby schools are now reopened after the mid-term break and parents and students alike were notably worried.”
“I have been given assurances from NI Water that the essential work to the fire hydrant mains is now complete and that the areas will have the barriers removed by the weekend. They have also apologised for the inconveniences caused and their intention was to accommodate the school closures.
“Transport NI who are also carrying out essential repair to the footpath on Culmore Road have also indicated that the work will be finished shortly and temporary signals are in place in an attempt to alleviate congestion.
“I am grateful for the expedience with which these two companies have carried out this work and I welcome their effort to attempt completion before mid-term break is over.”
