East Derry DUP MP Gregory Campbell will be hoping to maintain his large majority in the constituency ahead of June's General Election.

Prime Minister Theresa May announced earlier today that she will seek to call a snap General Election for June 8.

The holding of the election will come before the House of Commons tomorrow and is expected to easily pass after Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn announced he was in support of the election taking place.

Mr Campbell has been MP for East Derry since defeating the UUP's William Ross to take the seat in the 2001 General Election.

He held the seat in the 2015 General Election with a vote of 14,663, 42.2% of the overall vote giving him a majority of 22.5%.

Turnout in East Derry in 2015 was 34,714 or 51.9% of those eligible to vote.

In second place was Sinn Fein's East Derry MLA Caoimhe Archibald who polled 19.8% of the vote.

In third was UUP Cllr William McCandless who polled, 15.4% and fourth was the former SDLP MLA Gerry Mullan with 12.3% of the vote.

Also running were Alliance's Yvonne Boyle with 7.6%, Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol's (CISTA) Neil Paine with 1.5% and NI Conservatives' Liz St Clair-Legge with 1.2% of the vote.

It is not yet known who Mr Campbell will face in this election but the candidates are likely to make themselves known in the coming weeks.
