Having first opened as the Guava Juice Bar, the prominent local business announces its final weeks of trading

A cornerstone of Derry’s independent cafe scene is closing its doors for the last time. The owners of Java Coffee Shop, located at 33 Ferryquay Street, have announced they will officially shut down operations at the end of the month, marking the conclusion of a remarkable 22-year legacy in the heart of the city.

In a poignant emotional farewell Linda, Catherine, and their dedicated staff expressed profound gratitude to the generations of customers and workers who transformed the local business into a bustling neighborhood institution.

The prominent Ferryquay Street location has a rich history of serving locals and visitors alike. The business originally opened its doors over two decades ago, operating for four years as the Guava Juice Bar before transitioning into the deeply cherished Java Coffee Shop, which traded successfully for the subsequent 18 years.

"Words cannot express what a privilege it has been to get to know you all and share in your lives," the owners stated in a joint message. "We have watched children grow, celebrated birthdays maybe listened to the odd bit of gossip, tried to support through illnesses and deaths.

“We have shared many good times and many not-so-good times.

"Some customers have been coming through the doors of Java for 26 years, we consider you as part of the Java family and we hope you feel the same way about us.."

Known for its warm hospitality, familiar faces, and community-centric atmosphere, Java Coffee Shop became a sanctuary where regulars shared life updates, local gossip, and comfort through difficult times. Reflecting on their decades of service, the staff noted that their absolute favorite phrase to hear from patrons over the years was a simple, "We’ll be back!

“So for now, it is a sad goodbye. Come in and visit us for one last cup of tea or coffee and a chat and remember to bring any vouchers you have with you too.“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
