Shane McGuigan hits 0-7 for Derry, but they fall to first Division one defeat

Dublin 1-16

Derry 1-11

Derry’s winning start came to an end on Saturday night in Celtic Park as Ciaran Kilkenny and Brian Fenton led the charge for Dublin.

Shane McGuigan hit 0-7 for a home side that showed seven changes from their win over Galway six days earlier.

Dublin were out of the blocks with scores from Con O’Callaghan (free) and Ciaran Kilkenny before Shane McGuigan opened the Derry account.

Derry had goalkeeper Ryan Scullion to thank for saving a piledriver from O’Callaghan with Murchan clawed a McGuigan palmed effort at the other end.

Dublin pushed into a 0-7 to 0-3 lead before a Conor McCluskey goal pulled Derry back into the game after 27 minutes.

Brian Fenton and Sean Bugler edged Dublin into a three-point lead before Emmett Bradley hit the last score of the half, with Dublin leading 0-9 to 1-4.

Shane McGuigan had Derry off the mark early in the half after their triple half-time substitution.

Kilkenny hit a fourth point before Lachlan Murray curled over but it was Dublin who held control.

Cormac Costello hit a goal with his first touch to open a 1-12 to 1-7 lead after 51 minutes.

Fenton and Lorcan O’Dell added points for Dublin with McGuigan talking his tally to seven points in the closing stages.

After next weekend’s league break, Derry travel to Mayo in Round Six with Dublin also heading west to take on Galway in Salthill.
