Following recent comments from the McClean family, Head in the Game calls for empathy and continued conversations to challenge stigma

Head in the Game calls for understanding, kindness and continued conversation around mental health and seeking support.

Following recent comments made by Derry City FC’s James McClean regarding therapy and mental health, and the subsequent statement from his wife Erin, Head in the Game wishes to highlight the importance of understanding, kindness and continuing to challenge mental health stigma.

As an organisation working within the League of Ireland community, we recognise the influence that high-profile footballers can have, particularly on younger players and supporters. We want to make one thing clear: seeking professional help for your mental health is never a sign of weakness.

We also recognise that everyone has their own experiences and attitudes towards mental health, and that asking for help is not always easy.

Erin McClean's statement is a timely reminder that we don't always know the full circumstances of what someone may be going through. Before forming opinions or passing judgement, it's important to consider the wider context and remember that there is a person behind every headline.

We also strongly condemn the personal abuse directed towards James and others involved in football. People are entitled to disagree and challenge opinions, but personal abuse and harassment should never be part of that conversation.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with James, Erin and their family.

If anything positive can come from the events of the past 24 hours, we hope it is the conversations they have started around mental health.

People are talking about the importance of seeking help, understanding what others may be going through, and challenging the stigma that still exists, particularly among men.

Encouraging these conversations has always been one of the main aims of Head in the Game. We want people to feel comfortable speaking openly about their mental health, knowing that asking for support is never something to be ashamed of.

We hope these conversations continue long after the headlines have faded and encourage even one person who may be struggling to reach out for support.

Above all, let's remember to be kind to one another. We never truly know what someone else may be going through.
