Star of the Sea screening announced for Foyle Film Festival

As part of the 39th Foyle Film Festival, the film ‘Star of the Sea’ will be screened in Derry’s Cultúrlann Ui Chanain.
This screening will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, at 7.00pm and will be introduced by writer-director James Wynne.
Mr Wynne will also take part in a post-screening discussion including Raymond McCord, one of the former Star of the Sea players featured in the film. Hunger Striker Bobby Sands also played in the team.
The film begins in North Belfast in 1969. A football team from a local youth club, Star of the Sea, look unbeatable, winning every tournament in the region and defeating select XI teams from the Republic of Ireland making them the most formidable youth team in Ireland.
James Wynne's Irish-language documentary is the story of how a youth football team succeeded in unifying a community in North Belfast only to be torn apart by the violence and chaos of The Troubles. We follow the fate of the players over three decades. We see the courage of their conviction to ultimately live in peace, despite enduring unimaginable horror and loss, and how Star of the Sea becomes a symbol of hope for today’s generation striving for a brighter future in Northern Ireland.
I dtuaisceart Bhéal Feirste i 1969, bhí an chuma air nárbh fhéidir foireann sacair club óige áitiúil, Réalt na Mara, a chloí agus iad ag buachan gach comórtais sa cheantar gan trácht ar bhuachan ar fhoirne rogha XI ó Phoblacht na hÉireann. Foireann óige éachtach ba ea iad gan aon agó.
Scéal é seo faoin gcaoi ar éirigh le foireann sacair óige pobal a thabhairt le chéile i dtuaisceart Bhéal Feirste go dtí gur srac an foréigean agus na Trioblóidí ó chéile í. Leanaimid ar tharla do na himreoirí in imeacht scór bliain go leith. Feicimid a mianta cróga maireachtáil faoi shíocháin, in ainneoin an uafáis agus an mhéala a d’fhulaing siad agus feicimid Réalt na Mara ina eiseamláir dóchais ag glúin na linne seo ar mian léi todhchaí níos fearr a bheith aici i dTuaisceart Éireann.
