Funding green light for council’s town centre investment
Mid Ulster District Council has been given a green light for a multi-million pound town centre investment following confirmation of central government funding.
£4.5M has been allocated towards ‘public realm’ schemes in Magherafelt, Cookstown and Dungannon, with further investment of £3.5M by the Council.
All three town centres will benefit from new paving, lighting, street furniture, signage and planting, with contractors expected on site in Cookstown and Dungannon later this summer and in Magherafelt in early 2016.
The public realm works will be carried out in The Diamond area of Magherafelt (pictured) and connecting streets including Market Street, Rainey Street, Broad Street and Queen Street.
Councillor Linda Dillon, Chair of the Council, welcomed confirmation of DSD monies: “This is a multi-million pound investment across our town centres and its importance cannot be underestimated. With this funding comes further opportunity to enhance our towns and contribute substantially to their on-going regeneration and economic sustainability. I look forward now to progressing the public realm schemes and to engaging and working together with our retailers, businesses and residents to ensure we optimise the benefits for Mid Ulster.” Each scheme will be completed within a year.
