Gerry Anderson's funeral: Tributes to a man with a 'unique' talent

Gerry Anderson was a man with an ‘enormous and unique’ talent, his funeral service was told today.

A huge number of mourners gathered at St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry for the funeral of the popular broadcaster who died last Thursday at the age of 69.

Friends and former colleagues of Gerry’s from the worlds of TV and radio were among those who packed into the local church.

Speaking during the service, Father Paul Farren acknowledged the Derry man’s fame as a presenter.

However, Fr Farren said Gerry was a private man who was at his happiest when he was at home surrounded by his family.

“He was a famous man unaffected by fame,” he said.

During today’s service, Derry musical legend Gay McIntyre paid his own tribute to his former bandmate.

Gerry had been a member of Gay McIntyre’s band when he was a teenager.

Gay today played a version of Danny Boy on the saxophone in honour of Gerry.

Among those who carried Gerry’s remains from the church were his former Radio Foyle colleagues, Sean Coyle and Michael Bradley.
