A man who a judge said had shown 'a blatant disregard' for the driving laws has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Matthew Curry (38) of Clon Elagh in Derry appeared charged with driving while disqualified on October 31 and a charge of driving with no insurance on the same date.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

The court heard that police were on patrol in the Cornshell Fields area of the city when they saw a vehicle they believed to be driven by the accused who they knew to be disqualified.

The car in question exited Cornshell Fields at speed when the driver noticed the police.

A short time later the vehicle was seen again and the driver was seen sitting in the driver's seat.

The officer said police had 'no confidence' Curry would abide by any conditions.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that Curry had blatantly disregarded Court orders and remanded him in custody to appear again on November 11.
