Londonderry YMCA to celebrate 40 years in Drumahoe

Since its founding in 1856, Londonderry YMCA has been a cornerstone of the community, fostering growth, friendship, and positive experiences for generations
Londonderry YMCA has been awarded a grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to preserve and celebrate the rich history of its organisation as it marks 40 years in Drumahoe.
Using the £117,000 award from the Heritage Fund, Londonderry YMCA will establish a secure archive to protect over 165 years of its history, with an initial focus on the 40-year history at its Drumahoe site. The funding is creating two project posts and will establish an intergenerational heritage committee, provide training and create a series of engaging resources to showcase its rich heritage and make it more accessible to the public.
A special reunion event for all former members, staff, volunteers, and friends, will take place on Wednesday, June 25 from 7-9pm at the Londonderry YMCA, 51 Glenshane Road, Drumahoe.
Anyone with a personal or family connection to Londonderry YMCA is encouraged to attend the reunion to reminisce, reconnect and find out more about the heritage project. As so much of the organisation's history exists in stories and memories, it is keen to get these written down and recorded to stand as a testament to the organisation's enduring legacy and the invaluable contributions of all who have been involved.
At the event, a selection of photos of different activities such as rugby, youth, drama and the infinity project will be displayed, as well as a captivating 'Attic Treasures' showcase, inviting attendees to discover unique memorabilia from the organisation's rich history. There will be space to share memories and stories of the organisation in written format, and for those willing, there is a live recording opportunity where memories can be captured in audio or video. Refreshments will also be served throughout the evening.
General Secretary Lisa Dunn, said: "We are incredibly excited to welcome back so many familiar faces to celebrate 40 years of memories in our Drumahoe home. This reunion is not just about looking back; it's about reconnecting old friends and formally launching our heritage project, which thanks to National Lottery players will preserve and honour every facet of our story, and inspire future generations."
Dr Paul Mullan, Northern Ireland Director at The National Lottery Heritage Fund said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we’re able to help Londonderry YMCA mark this milestone. They will work with past and present associates and in particular young people to create an archive, learn new heritage skills and explore the organisation’s contribution to society since 1856.
We wish the team every success as the project develops and encourage anyone interested to attend the reunion and get involved in activities that will reflect the stories of the organisation’s activities over the years.”
