A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrates Court charged with possession of Class A drugs, assault of police, assault, resisting police and criminal damage.Matthew Anderson (22) of Ballymagowan Avenue in Derry admitted the offences that took place on October 1 last year.

The court heard that Anderson initially turned up at the home of a family friend asking for money, appearing to be 'out of his head' on drugs.

When the victim refused to give him money, Anderson came into the house aggressively and shouted abuse at the woman.

Upon the arrival of police, Anderson was found to be in possession of nine ecstasy tablets that he claimed weren't his.

Police proceeded to take him to hospital for treatment.

While in the hospital, Anderson began to shout abuse at police and other people in the hospital, attacking officers but not causing injury.

He was arrested again on October 12 and answered no comment when interviewed the next day.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that, without intervention, Anderson 'may become a statistic' due to his addiction issues.

He added that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had support on the outside.

He was sentenced to five months in custody.
