Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man refused to tell police who was driving his car that had been driven at speed in the Waterside area of the city.

Kristyan Darryl Murray (31) of Forest Park in Derry admitted a charge of failing to give police information on a driver.

The court heard that police were investigating a report of a potential drink driver.

They observed a vehicle and attempted to stop it but it made off at speed.

Police tried to catch the vehicle but failed but did manage to get the registration.

The registered owner was Murray but when police asked him who was driving the vehicle he refused to give that information.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said he accepted the court would take a 'dim view' of this charge.

He said his client had not given any explanation as to why he didn't give the details of the driver.

The solicitor said that one could only assume he didn't want to get someone else into trouble.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he regarded someone not co-operating with the police as a 'very serious matter'.

He said that Murray was either covering up for himself or for someone else.

He disqualified Murray for three months and fined him £750.
