Eoghan Maughan (29) of Clon Dara in Derry admitted on October 5 this year, stealing an item of clothing worth £100 from JD Sports in the Richmond Centre
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with theft and obstruction of police.
Eoghan Maughan (29) of Clon Dara in Derry admitted on October 5 this year, stealing an item of clothing worth £100 from JD Sports in the Richmond Centre.
Police attended the scene of the theft and Maughan was subsequently found via CCTV in Foyle Street. Police asked him to remove his jacket to find he was wearing the stolen item with the labels still attached.
Police returned the clothing to the shop but Maughan managed to flee the scene.
On October 29, police were patrolling the Strand Road when they noticed Maughan and arrested him for the theft, adding a charge of obstruction of police.
Defense solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that Maughan 'dealt with the manner very well' on this occasion but not so well originally, making full admissions and offering to pay back any money to the shop.
He was sentenced to four months in custody, suspended for two years, fined £200 and ordered to pay a £100 compensation order to JD Sports.
