A police officer said there were 'concerns' about Paul Farren (34) who has192 previous convictions

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man charged with sexual assault who was released on bail last month on condition he does not be intoxicated in public was found in the street with a bottle of Smirnoff Ice in his hand.

Paul Farren (34) of no fixed abode admitted breaching his bail on October 29.

A police officer told the court that police were called to a report of a male causing a disturbance outside the Holiday Inn on the Strand Road.

When they arrived they found Farren with the bottle of alcohol in his hand.

He was arrested for breaching his bail which prohibited him from being intoxicated in public.

A police officer said that the defendant had been released on High Court bail last month and said there were 'concerns' about the defendant.

He said Farren had 192 previous convictions and said that nearly all his offending was linked to his alcohol.

The officer said that there was a clear risk of breaching bail and re-offending.

Defence counsel Michael Donaghey said that Farren was 'no stranger to the court'.

He said that the defendant had spent 6 weeks since being on bail with no offending.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that there was every reason to revoke Farren's bail but at least he had not re-offended which he usually did.

He said he would give Farren one chance and release him on bail.

Farren will appear again next month.
