A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with driving at 101 miles per hour.

Sean Lyon-Duffy (38) of Cluain Mor Drive in Belfast was charged with driving at 101 miles per hour on the road to Claudy on July 22 last year.

His solicitor told the court that it was his first time driving on the new stretch of road and that he didn't notice the speed creeping up.

The court heard that Lyons-Duffy, a lorry driver, is 'highly thought of' by his employer and that he has a four year old child that he drives to various places.

District Judge Barney McElhom described the speed as 'extraordinary' and disqualified him for four weeks with a fine of £400.
