Man charged with assaulting partner remanded in custody

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates Court charged with assault.
James Moore (39) of Fern Park in Derry was charged with, on January 14, assaulting his partner causing her actual bodily harm.
Police received a report on January 17 from the victim telling them of the assault. She gave a written statement alleging that Moore had attacked her, requiring her to need stitches on her eyebrow.
The court heard how the victim managed to lock herself in the bathroom and call her sister, who arrived with her partner.
Moore later claimed that it was he that was attacked when his partner pulled his finger back.
Police objected to bail as they believe that Moore is at risk of reoffending. They told the court that he has eighty previous convictions and has a 'propensity for violence'.
The court further heard that, upon being released from custody on January 11, Moore immediately returned to the victim's address and stayed there.
Police added that it was not entirely one sided as the victim herself has a number of violent convictions, although none against Moore.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that this was a 'difficult case' but added that Moore set out a series of events that were the opposite of what was alleged, claiming that he was attacked by three people.
He was refused bail and will appear again on February 15.
