A man has appeared in Derry Magistrates Court charged with breaching his bail and further domestic offences.

John Paul McDonaugh, 55, of Bonds Hill, appeared charged with harassment and threatening to damage property as well as breaching his bail by contacting his former partner.

The court heard police received a report on October 2 that McDonaugh had been at the address of his former partner that he had previously been ordered to stay away from.

Initially, McDonaugh was found going through the victim's bins, threatening to 'burn her out' when confronted.

He later returned to the address two further times on the same date knocking at the door.

Upon the arrival of police, McDonaugh was arrested for threatening to damage the property.

In the police station, he identified himself on CCTV but called the alleged victim a liar.

McDonaugh also has 34 previous convictions, but none related to the victim.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that McDonaugh had been on bail since July without incident but that the alleged victim had been back in contact with him recently.

He suggested that the defendant could be prohibited from entering the city side.

Police objected to the application due to the 'very high risk' of reoffending, and district Judge Barney McElhom refused bail.

McDonagh was remanded in custody to appear again on October 10.
