A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates Court charged with theft, possession of cannabis and possession of a knife.

Ciaran Hogan (39) of the Carlisle Road in Derry was charged with, on November 3, stealing a handbag containing a number of personal items. He was also charged with possession of cannabis on the same date and, on October 19, being in possession of a knife.

Police were initially alerted to a theft that been reported in Tracey's Bar. Upon arrival, security staff identified Hogan as the accused and police found him in Great James Street still in possession of the bag that contained the alleged victim's phone and bank card.

They also found him to be in possession of cannabis and another man's bank card that he claimed he had been given.

When interviewed, he admitted to taking the bag and breaching previous bail conditions.

Hogan had been previously arrested on October 19 after police spoke to him while out on routine patrol in Bridge Street in Derry.

Police said that Hogan appeared to be skittish and aggressive. Upon searching him, police found him to be in possession of a knife.

Police objected to bail as they said Hogan had a high risk of reoffending.

Defence Barrister Sinead Rogan said that Hogan had made partial admissions to police but maintained that he had permission to have one of the bank cards.

She added that he had been using the cannabis to self-medicate following a facial injury last year.

Bail was refused and he will appear again on November 28.
