A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with resisting police and refusing to provide a breath specimen.

Ryan Large (32) of Rowanvale Crescent in Newtownards was charged with the offences that occurred on February 17 this year after police attended a road traffic collision outside Derry.

A paramedic first alerted police to the situation after noticing that Large seemed to be intoxicated.

When police arrived, Large claimed that he picked up his phone and lost control of the car. Police said they could smell alcohol when speaking to him.

When asked for a breath sample, Large refused and police had to physically remove him from the vehicle.

Defence Barrister Stephen Chapman said that Large wanted to apologise openly for his behaviour.

He added that Large has been out of work recently due to mental health issues and the incident could be blamed on an 'episode'.

Large was fined £500 and disqualified for 16 months.
