Man previously been shot by paramilitaries was carrying knuckle duster for protection - court told

A man who has previously been shot by paramilitaries claimed he was carrying a knuckle duster for protection.
Gareth Crumlish, 37, of Beraghvale in Derry, appeared in Derry Magistrates Court charged with possessing the knuckle duster as well as possession of cannabis.
Police found the knuckle duster after observing Crumlish looking nervous and trying to hide his identity when he noticed them on May 3, 2022.
When police found the weapon, he told them that it was for self defence, telling them 'my life's under threat'.
He said: "What do you expect me to do? I can't carry a gun."
He was also found, on August 14 this year, to be in possession of cannabis, which he claimed was for medical purposes.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that Crumlish now did have a prescription for cannabis and that he had suffered 'horrific' injuries after being shot.
He also said that he had a relevant record and had pleaded at the earliest possible opportunity.
He received a sentence of three months, suspended for twelve months, and a £140 fine.
