Man receives suspended sentence for assaulting a man and damaging a window

A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today for assaulting a man and damaging a window.
Jonathan Briers (25) of no fixed abode admitted two charges of assault and criminal damage that occurred on October 17.
The court heard that Briers was in a hostel in Derry and a member of staff was sitting in an office when the defendant entered asking for a phone.
He started 'shouting aggressively' and pushed the staff member twice before leaving the building.
A short time later Briers tried to return and was refused entry and damaged a window.
A defence barrister said her client was trying to turn his life around and was ready to engage to deal with his issues.
District Judge Ted Magill said that the defendant had 'an appalling record' of 90 previous convictions.
He said 'despite serious misgivings' he was going to give Briers a chance.
He imposed a sentence of 3 months in prison suspended for 18 months and order Briers to pay £100 in compensation.
