Derry Magistrate's Court heard today that a man who was due to appear in court was refusing to leave his cell.

Matthew Anderson (23) of no fixed abode was charged with an assault that took place on December 1.

He was also charged with, on the same date, stealing an Xbox and damaging the door of a police car.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and custody staff told the court Anderson had made it clear 'in no uncertain terms' the he was not prepared to appear.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley did not make an application for bail and Anderson will appear again on December 23.
