A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with the attempted murder of his wife a doctor in Altnagelvin Hospital.

Raghib Ali Rizvi Syed (57) of The Hillocks in Derry appeared charged with the attempted murder of the woman on June 13.

He was also charged with threatening to kill her and his two sons on the same date as well as a charge of wounding one of his sons with intent to inflict grievious bodily harm.

Syed was also charged with arson again on June 13 as well as acharge of assaulting the woman on June 12.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said that there would be no application for bail at this stage as the defendant had no address apart from the one he shared with the alleged injured party in the case.

He told the court that Syed had been taken to hospital on June 12 after 'a psychotic episode' but refused treatment.

Then on Friday, June 13 the alleged victim had phoned the hospital and paramedics had attended and, the solicitor said, the alleged offences occurred while they were there.

Mr Harvey said his client was aware that he would be remanded in custody and requested the court to order a psychiatric assessment.

The police officer told the court that the defendant had been deemed fit for interview following his arrest.

Syed was remanded in custody to appear again on July 10.
