A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates Court over various offences alleged to have occurred in Altnagelvin Hospital at the weekend.

Conor Haughey (33), of no fixed abode, was charged with two counts of assaulting police officers, disorderly behaviour, criminal damage to a police vehicle and posesion of cannabis.

All of the offences were said to have occurred on September 17 and 18.

A police officer said he could connect Haughey to the charges and opposed his application for bail.

The court heard that Haughey was in A&E for a finger injury and was abusive to other patients.

He also showed a nurse some tablets and a quantity of cannabis he had in his possession.

When police arrived, Haughley asked to go to the toilet and then called officers 'pervs'. He was then said to have kicked one officer in the face and headbutted another.

While being interviewed, Haughey was described as 'openly hostile' to police.

The court heard that Haughley had 83 previous convictions and the police officer said he was 'highly likely' to re-offend if released.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that Haughley had attended hospital for a genuine injury and then things had escalated when he felt 'uncomfortable' with police standing close to him when he was at the toilet.

District Judge Barney McElhom said he had 'behaved disgracefully' and Haughey, who had constantly interrupted the court, was remanded in custody.

He will appear again on October 12.
