A man who admitted being disorderly during an Apprentice Boys march in the city has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

James Richard Doherty (26) whose address was given as Maghaberry Prison admitted one charge that occurred on June 21 last year.

The court heard that at 11.35am on that date police were in attendance as an Apprentice Boys parade was taking place in Derry City Centre.

As the parade was making its way towards Carlisle Road Doherty became abusive to police in 'full view' of parade spectators.

Despite warnings Doherty continued to be abusive at one stage he shouted 'up the Derry lads cartel'.

As the parade passed Ferryquay Gate and was being followed by spectators Doherty continued to shout 'in a loud aggressive manner' calling police 'scum'.

Defence solicitor Keith Kyle said that the disorderly was simply verbal as he felt police had crowded around him.

He said his client accepted he behaved in a way he should not have.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said that Doherty had 'quite a record' with 56 previous convictions and imposed a two month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.
