A man who was caught on police body worn cameras shouting abuse at an elderly couple will be sentenced in February.

Sean McCauley (32) of Great James Street in Derry appeared charged with disorderly behaviour on December 18.

The court heard that police were in the William Street area of the city and had occasion to speak to the defendant.

He started being abusive and police left the area in case their presence was what was causing his behaviour.

However, a short time later he was seen following a elderly couple and shouting go abuse at them.

The court heard that the couple were 'obviously distressed' at the defendant's behaviour.

An officer said that McCauley was under the influence of an intoxicating substance and was not fit to be processed until this morning (Tuesday)

Bail was opposed due to the fact that McCauley is currently on bail for other charges and breached his no alcohol condition.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said 'it was difficult to disagree with anything the officer had said.'

He said his client wished to apologise to the couple for his actions.

The solicitor said that McCauley accepted 'he is in real trouble' but asked the court to give him a final chance.

Deputy District Judge John Read said he would give the defendant 'one final chance' and released him on bail so that a pre-sentence report could be prepared.

He will be sentenced on February 23.
