Mayor urges support for Derry charity fun walk

The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Brenda Stevenson, is calling on local people of all ages to take part in a  Sponsored Family Fun Walk in aid of her two chosen charities.

The fun event, being staged as part of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal, will take place on Saturday, Febuary 21 at 11.00am, with all the proceeds going to , Something Special and Circle of Support for Autism Families.

Launching the Family Fun Walk Cllr Stevenson encouraged schools, clubs and parents to lend their support.

She said: “I know most people are setting themselves fitness goals for the New Year and this is a great way to get off to a good start!

“I’m asking everyone to get behind both these causes by walking, running, cycling, roller-blading, or even pushing a pram for 3km, and raising some much needed funds to assist my two chosen charities in delivering their services to families across Derry. Both organisations have a network of dedicated volunteers and staff who rely on the generosity of the public to continue their invaluable work.

“This is very much an event for all ages so I would like to see lots of support from our local schools and for youngsters to bring their mums and dads along on the day to join in the fun.”

Something Special provides both educational and creative opportunities for children and young adults with special needs and learning disabilities, as well as organising a whole host of fun events throughout the year. COS (Circle of Support) for Autism Families is a group run by local parents to support families of children diagnosed with or being assessed for ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Sponsored Family Fun Walk event is being sponsored by the Waterfoot Hotel, Estate Services, In Your Space and Airporter.

Walkers are asked to assemble at the Waterfoot Hotel for registration at 10.30am and minimum entry fee is £5 per adult, while children can take part for free. Car parking is available at the Waterfoot Hotel and a bus will be available from Ebrington to transport walkers back to their car.

The walk will start at 11.00am with walkers making their way to Waterfoot Park before continuing along the Greenway to Ebrington Square.  On arrival at Ebrington Square walkers will be escorted to the ballroom area located near Dales Corner for refreshments and entertainment provided by In Your Space.

Everyone taking part is asked to pick up a sponsorship form to raise as much as they can for the Mayor’s Charities. Sponsor Forms are available by contacting Karen Henderson, Member Services Officer, on 02871376527 or email [email protected].  Sponsor money will be collected at the registration point at the Waterfoot Hotel.  Additional sponsor money raised after the event can be deposited at the Council Offices, 98 Strand Road, Derry.
