McLaughlin appeals to smokers to adhere to ban at health facilities

News that smoking is to be banned from all hospitals and health facilities across the North, has been welcomed by Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin.

The move follows the Western Health decision last year snub out smoking all its facilities, including Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.

Ms McLaughlin, chairperson of the Stormont health committee, appealed to smokers to adhere to the ban and work with staff to ensure a “smoke free environment\” for patients, staff and visitors.

She added: “Smoking is responsible for many illnesses including cancer and heart disease so anything that is done to encourage people to stop has to be welcomed.

“The news announced today on No Smoking Day is welcome news for people attending medical facilities across the North in that they will no longer be exposed to passive smoking.

“I would also urge people to use No Smoking Day in order to quit the habit to improve their health and lessen the risk of a premature death.”
