New measures being brought in to tackle anti-social behaviour at Derry car park

A Derry councillor today said that new measures are being introduced to tackle anti-social behaviour at a car park in the city.
SDLP Derry Councillor Shauna Cusack said she hoped the problems would soon be reduced by a series of preventative measures being installed.
She said: “Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan and I have been working relentlessly on this issue since the constituency office opened a few years ago here at Longs, opposite the affected area.
“Every week we received complaints of late-night noise, sleep deprivation and even abuse endured by local residents.
“As this is privately owned land and the car park could not be closed off at night due to access for residents, statutory agencies could do little to improve the situation.
“We undertook a number of engagement sessions with residents, users and stakeholders such as the PSNI to highlight the issue and appeal to the small group who were creating the nuisance.
“While the PSNI were sympathetic and facilitated as much as possible, budget cuts dictated that they only had a limited response team.”
Colr Cusack (pictured above at the car park) said KFC had agreed to place a barrier at the entrance to their car park which, she said, will give welcome relief to Foyleview residents.
“Secondly, landlords for the remaining area affecting those facing the Strand Road have confirmed the go ahead of a Smart Park system, to be installed next week that will record the details of all cars using the area.
“I have also pressed the Council for the installation of CCTV monitoring of the section of road and car park which is currently being costed and of which I am confident will receive approval in the new year."
“While the main car park will continue to be accessible to the general public, these measures will act as a massive deterrent to those individuals who have no regard for the residents.”
