New pathways approved at Drumahoe pitches

A number of new footpaths aimed at enhancing the ‘recreational value’ of an existing green area in Derry will be constructed after planning approval was issued for the plans.
The work will see a new footpath network put in place at the Drumahoe pitches, with a new pedestrian link made up of steps going through the existing woodland at the site between the new pathway and Drumahoe District Park.
The plans were discussed at last week’s meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee, where a planning officer said that no objections had been received against the proposals, and that it would not impact on ‘surrounding amenities’.
She added that the site is located within the Drumahoe pitches on the Glenshane Road and opposite the YMCA playing fields and Park and Ride car park.
The officer said that the three existing grass pitches would be retained and the development will not result in the loss of any existing open space.
“It will enhance the recreational value and public access of the area and will not have an adverse impact upon the character,” the officer added.
The DUP’s Drew Thompson welcomed the move as the SDLP councillor Gus Hastings, who added that it would be a ‘disgrace’ if council allowed the site to ‘go into disrepair’.
The application, which was lodged by the council, was then approved.
