No job losses at Seagate’s Derry plant

Seagate Technologies, Derry's largest employer, has confirmed there will be no job losses at its plant in the city in its current global restructuring

There had been fears for the future of staff at the plant at Springtown Industrial Estate after the company announced yesterday it was to cut its glorbal workforce by 6,500 – around 14 per cent.

However, a spokesperson for the firm this afternoon said no jobs would being going at its Derry plant.

The spokesperson said: “Further to Seagate's 11 July global restructuring announcement which referenced a reduction in global headcount by approximately 6,500 employees, I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that Seagate Springtown will not be affected by this phase of restructuring.”

The news has been welcomed by SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan who had called on the company to clarify the situation regarding its Derry workforce.

Seventy workers lost their jobs at the Springtown factory when Seagate announced in May it was cutting his global workforce by around three per cent.
