'Pathetic' vandals target Hunger Strike memorial sign

Vandals who targeted a Hunger Strike memorial sign in Dungiven have been described as ‘pathetic’. A number of posters advertising KFC’s double decker burgers were stuck on the sign, which was erected at the entrance to the Bleach Green Lane estate as a tribute to Kevin Lynch and the nine other Hunger Strikers. Another sign saying ‘Keep calm and wish Kevin a happy birthday’ was also erected on the sign. Kevin Lynch’s birthday would have been on Monday (May 25). He joined the Irish Hunger Strike on May 23, 1981 and died 71 days later. The posters were removed from the sign this afternoon. Sinn Féin councillor Sean McGlinchey said: “The people who put these posters up are a joke. They are pathetic.”
