Sinn Féin MLA, Ian Milne has told the County Derry Post that this weekend's commemorative events throughout our county to mark the 1916 Rising were a fitting tribute to Ireland's patriot dead.

The republican leader outlined the great efforts being made by County Derry & Antrim Republican Graves Association to ensure that the commemorative parades and ceremonies were "colourful and vibrant".

Mr Milne said: "The main Counties Derry & Antrim 1916 Easter Rising commemorative parade took place at The Loup on Easter Sunday, when despite inclement weather, hundreds of marchers assembled at Ballyronan Road at 2.30pm sharp before making their way to the graveside of Brigadier Seán Larkin where a ceremony of remembrance was chaired by young Ballinasceen Sinn Féin activist, Emma Sheerin.  Sinn Féin National Chairperson, Declan Kearney MLA  who was guest speaker was greeted by an outbreak of Spring sunshine for his very upbeat and vibrant republican message.

Mr Milne concluded: "As always South Derry Martyrs Flute Band was joined by other bands including Kevin Lynch Memorial Flute Band (Dungiven) and Cloney Independent Flute Band (Ahoghill) when adding great music to the event."

Earlier in the day, North Derry republicans gathered for their 1916 commemoration in Dungiven at 12.15 pm before travelling to The Loup to join hundreds of republicans and supporters from throughout our county. Mr Milne gave the oration on behalf of the republican leadership at the Dungiven event. Wreath-laying ceremonies were held at republican plots and monuments over the course of the weekend.

Today, hundreds of republicans from Swatragh and district are gathering in the village for the Annual Easter Monday1916 Easter Rising commemoration, when they will be addressed by newly elected Sinn Féin MLA for Foyle, Elisha McCallion.

A ceremony of remembrance for fallen comrades will be held at Granaghan Churchyard before the parade will return to The Diamond for the reading of  The Proclamation of The Irish Republic.
