Police in Derry & Strabane responded to 140 weekend emergency and priority calls

The calls included domestic-related incidents, concern for safety calls, assault, and burglary

Police in Derry City & Strabane responded to 140 emergency and priority calls for service from Friday morning, 8th March, to Monday morning, 11th March.

These included domestic-related incidents, concern for safety calls, assault, and burglary.

Derry City and Strabane Chief Inspector Yvonne McManus said: "Officers dealt with a wide range of calls over the weekend. Some of these calls involved people experiencing personal crisis and in need of immediate help. Officers worked with partner agencies over the weekend in respect of some of these calls, including health sector colleagues.

“Officers also worked with colleagues from An Garda Síochána in relation to a driving matter, which illustrates our commitment to working together to tackle the issues impacting people who live in these areas.

"I also want to take this opportunity to commend the members of the public who called us with information about a burglary in the city at the weekend. This quick, live time reporting meant our officers were able to respond quickly and apprehend a suspect who has since been charged to court for burglary. We would encourage anyone who sees anything suspicious or untoward in their community to call us immediately. The faster we receive information, the quicker we can respond.

"Unfortunately, assaults on our officers continue with a number of colleagues assaulted over the weekend. One officer was kicked while another officer was punched.

"Our officers are here to help people, and protect communities. Being assaulted is not 'part of the job. It is not acceptable."

Chief Inspector McManus added: "We never lose sight of the fact that behind every call is someone who finds themselves in a situation where they need help. If you need help, please call us on 101 and, always in an emergency, 999.”
