After an incident involving his mother a Derry man has been given probation at the local Magistrate's Court.

Darren McDonagh (30) of Clon Elagh in Derry admitted charges of criminal damage, threat to damage property and disorderly behaviour on March 2 this year.

The court heard that police were called to a report of a mother and son fighting in the street.

Police attended and when they arrived McDonagh started 'acting aggressively' towards them and had to be restrained.

They were told that an argument had started when McDonagh asked for cigarettes and he smashed a vase and made threats to damage the house.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that the incident involving his mother came about because the defendant stopped taking his medication.

Deputy District Judge John Rea told McDonagh that people were trying to help him and said 'you need to recognise that'.

McDonagh received a Probation Order for a period of 12 months.
