Recently-arrived Syrian refugee families offered hand of friendship by Derry City

Syrian refugees who arrived in Derry early this year are to be special guests of Derry City when the Candy Stripes host Wexford Youths in an Airtricity Premiership glash at Brandywell tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).
The club has invited the 13 families to the game,
Orlaith Meenan, commercial and marketing manager at City, said they were delighted to reach out to the Syrian families who fled from the civil war in their homeland.
“Derry people are renowned for their hospitality and their willingness to help others,” she said.
“We here at Derry City Football Club feel like we are in a great position to try and help where and when we can.
“We want people to realise that The Brandy well opens its gates to everyone irrespective of gender, religion, colour, creed or beliefs.
“If we can help to provide leadership and acceptance in terms of integrating the Syrians into the wider community of Derry then I feel like we have achieved something monumental.
“This is a massive step forward and will clearly show how Derry is leading the line when it comes to tolerance and acceptance.
“Football is a universal language, it is understood throughout the world and I really hope that they enjoy the game on Friday night and for at least 90 minutes they feel part of the Red and White Army and the comradery that it brings.”
Ms Meenan thanked P Dunne Bus Hire who are providing a bus to transport the group to the Brandywell for tonight’s game.
