A young Derry boy who saved his friend’s life while on holiday has received a special award in recognition of his bravery.

Seven-year-old Darcy Ward-McKeever was on holiday with his family in Alcudia on the sunshihine island of Majorca earlier this month when his heroic actions saved another young boy from drowning.

Darcy, a primary three pupil at Rosemount Primary School, was playing near a swimming pool with a young boy called Taihan with whom he had become friends on holiday.

Six-yearold Taihan accidentally stepped into the deep end of the pool and disappeared under the water.

He was saved from drowning by the quick actions of Darcy, who jumped into the pool and managed to drag him to safety.

A special assembly was held at Rosemount Primary School this morning, at which the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Elisha McCallion, presented Darcy with a special plaque in recognition of his brave actions.

During the assembly, the school’s principal, Shaun McLaughlin, invited Darcy to tell his fellow pupils of the drama which unfolded while he was on holiday, which was greeted by a huge round of applause from his fellow pupils and staff, while Darcy’s proud parents, Sinead and Adrian, and his sister, Peyton, looked on.

The Mayor then presented Darcy with his award (pictured) and told "her wee mucker" that he had done a "fantastic job."

Darcy then told the Mayor he has kept in contact with Taihan, while the principal Mr McLaughlin, described Darcy as a "very special boy" and that the school was "so proud of what he had achieved."
