St Pius X College in Magherafelt shortlisted at annual Breakfast Club Awards

The college has been named as a regional finalist in the Best Breakfast Club category in this year’s Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.
St Pius X College in Magherafelt has been named as a regional finalist in the Best Breakfast Club category in this year’s Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.
The awards are a chance to celebrate breakfast clubs up and down the country and the teachers and support staff who go above and beyond to help their students every school morning.
Shortlisted schools have the chance to win £1000 and an invitation to the House of Commons for the awards ceremony in November 2025.
Schools can decide how best to spend the winnings to enhance their breakfast club based on the specific needs of the pupils and the school – whether that’s additional support staff, ingredients, equipment or more.
The breakfast club at St Pius X College is open to all 1,160 pupils and it provides a safe and welcoming space each morning that supports both emotional wellbeing and academic readiness. Throughout the year, this club has seasonal and festive raffles and competitions such as Halloween quizzes, Christmas hampers, and Easter egg hunts which help foster a sense of excitement and belonging.
A recent survey from Kellogg’s* highlighted the importance of breakfast clubs for families up and down the country, with almost double the amount of children visiting a breakfast club every day in 2025 vs 2023 (up from 10% to 18%). A third of teachers (36%) say that they see children arriving at school hungry every day, and nearly 1 in 10 (9%) parents say that their children do not have breakfast in the morning.
A spokesperson from St Pius X College in Magherafelt said: “We're really proud to be shortlisted for the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards and we can’t think of anyone more deserving than our breakfast club staff who go above and beyond for our students every morning.
"As well as making sure pupils get a filling breakfast, our breakfast club provides a warm, inclusive space where children can make new friends, build confidence and get ready for a day of learning. Our families tell us it also makes a huge difference to their daily lives, supporting our wider community of parents and carers.”
Andrew Ridge, Social Impact and Sustainability Lead at Kellogg’s said: “We understand the crucial role that breakfast clubs play for families, and our own research has shown an increased demand in recent years. The positive impact these clubs have on local communities is made possible by the passion and commitment of the teachers and volunteers behind them.
‘’Breakfast clubs like the one at St Pius X College play a vital role in getting pupils to school, and getting them fed and ready to start the school day. Students can thrive when they are welcomed into a safe and warm environment, with access to a filling meal and supportive community to start their day.
‘’That is why every year Kellogg’s takes the time to honour the amazing work that breakfast club leaders, teachers, and anyone involved, do every day to help make the clubs so special.”
Six schools will be crowned as Best Breakfast Club for their region, and this year will also see the introduction of a brand new category – Breakfast Club Hero – which celebrates an individual who goes above and beyond to support the running of their school breakfast club.
A specialist panel of judges will assess all shortlisted entries and the winners will be announced later in the year.
Kellogg’s has been supporting breakfast clubs for nearly 30 years. During that time, it has invested over £6 million to support school breakfast clubs across the UK, with schools able to use Kellogg’s grants for any aspect of their clubs including equipment, ingredients or staff, so the school can use the funding in a way that best suits their needs.
