A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with criminal damage and possession of drugs.

Allan Hanley (38) of Bonds Hill in Derry was charged after kicking and breaking the window of a hostel on November 8.

Police were called by staff who had thrown him out of the property for drug use.

Upon arrival, police searched Hanley and discovered a quantity of cannabis on his person.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said that Hanley had 'struck the window in frustration' as his relationship had recently broken down.

He was sentenced to five months in custody, suspended for two years and ordered to pay a £250 compensation order.
